Lung Disease

Lung disease or respiratory disease includes a wide range of conditions including asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, lung cancer plus many others. All of these conditions affect the lungs in different ways depending on which part of the lungs they act on.

The lungs are made up of three distinct parts that are each associated with a range of conditions and diseases. The three parts of the lungs are roughly broken up into:

  • Airways and lung tissue
  • Blood vessels of the lungs
  • Lining of the lungs (also known as the pleura)

The picture above shows the airways of the lungs (dark blue), the lung tissue (light blue) and the lining of the lungs (also known as the pleura).

Respiratory disease is responsible for a wide range of different conditions varying from mild disease such as the common cold to terminal conditions such as lung cancer. Depending on the type of condition and it's severity, lung disease may be managed with lifestyle modification, medications or finally surgery.

The largest risk factor for developing respiratory disease is undoubtedly smoking. This increases the risk of developing a number of different conditions affecting the lung including asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and in a worst-case scenario, lung cancer. Studies have shown that by quitting smoking the risk of developing respiratory disease are significantly reduced and in those who already have some type of lung disease the severity of the disease is often improved.
